The Daily Police Harassment in Wente Winkul Mapu

The Daily Police Harassment in Wente Winkul Mapu

October 26th, 2012

After the favourable decision by the Chilean Justice System on the Mapuche Political Prisoners and latter end of the hunger strike, the Wente Winkul Mapu Community was returning to their homes when they were detained by police.

This kind of police brutality can be seen daily in the communities that can be seen in this video. It was in the railroad crossing in Pidima, where GOPE riot and Special Force police interrupted the flow of traffic with the excuse of “vehicle control,” demanding identification.

In the end, the documents that they asked for had no importance, and let people through because they had already managed to implement yet another act of harassment.

In this way, Eric Montoya together with Paulino Levipan end the action after 60 days, accusing officials of irregularities in their processes.

The end of the mobilization was made known from Angol prison by leaders of the Wente Winkul Mapu Community, along with representatives of different territories from across Wallmapu and social organizations that were also present.

October 26th, 2012

Today at 5PM in front of the Toronto Chilean Consulate, the second demonstration was carried out programmed in support of the Wente Winkul Mapu Mapuche Political Prisoner Hunger Strike, which concluded hours beforehand following 60 days of mobilization. Besides shedding light on great public pressure that made the Chilean Supreme Court ruling favourable to young hunger strikers in their just demands, the repression of the racist Chilean State against the communities in resistance, their organizations, and their Weichafe [Warriors] carrying out unjust and arbitrary sentences were also denounced. Following is the Communiqué that was handed out during the protest. Special thanks to the Six Nations support network, The April 28th Coalition for endorsing today’s rally.

Unto the latest repressive incidents and the escalating of violence carried out by the racist Chilean State against our Mapuche communities in resistance; the Women’s Coordinating Committee for a Free Wallmapu [Toronto] publically denounces the militarization, criminalization and the merciless repression carried out in Wallmapu led by the government of Sebastian Piñera and his militarized police.

The abuse against children, youth, women and elders has been obvious by the uniformed and civilian police, cowardly hit men that today proliferate throughout Wallmapu, Mapuche Territory. A land that has been invaded and usurped by the racist Chilean State a little more than 100 years ago, in the dirty “Pacification of Araucanía” where the Mapuche Nation through, lies, reduction, assimilation and death were displaced physically, culturally and ideologically from their territories.

It is within this authoritarian and repressive framework that our prisoner Mapuche Nation has has to survive and resist.

As well, within this prison named Chile, an incessant struggle has had to be developed in order to maintain its identity separate from the oppressive State that murdered our grandparents.

It has not been easy to undertake this necessary and noble idea for those that begun yesterday and continue today. The brutal State repression has been felt systematically in its Weichafe [Warriors], in its organizations, in the persecution, imprisonment, set-ups, torture and death.

The judicialization through criminalization has been exerted without having jurisdiction over our Weichafe [Warriors] and our People.

They have applied their Settler law through the force given to them by the Law; the same illegal laws that they applied to steal our territories and to conform to the Chilean State nearly 200 years ago.

This is not any different to the illegal “Law” that opens the door to State and transnational corporations on our territories. Such as the megaprojects of forestry and mining investment in our territories, contracting mercenaries, murderers dressed as police officers and civilians in the name of the “law;” the official theft of our natural resources.

Unto the frustration of an unjust and arbitrary conviction of a racist, deaf, blind and mute judicial system, sentencing our Brothers to immobilization, isolation, the separation of loved ones and of the natural lives, the hunger strike is carried out. This makes international headlines, despite the information blockade from the dominating classes and also in some cases certain opportunist “solidarity” groups and some “Mapuche” that travel in the name of their People and do not have the dignity to give even the most minimal detail on the issue at hand.

Today in Angol Prison in Wallmapu (so-called southern Chile), various Mapuche Political Prisoners are held, convicted to long and unjust sentences that have been given through set-ups, torture, double jeopardy and the application of the Antiterrorist Law with faceless witnesses.

All have taken part in the long and painful hunger strikes more than once, exposing their lives to the extreme in order to place the historical demands at the forefront, as with the conflicts that our people suffer and denounce those responsible.

Today a few hours ago, four youth, nearly children of the Wente Winkul Mapu Community faced exactly 60 agonizing days on Hunger Strike. The strength and the decision of the hunger strikers forced the Chilean Supreme Court to partially rule in favour of the prisoners and the Wente Winkul Mapu Community confirmed that they would indeed stop the hunger strike. In this way, Eric and Rodrigo Montoya together with Paulino Levipan and Daniel Levinao stop the act of pressure after 60 days , whom were accusing their trials to have been biased.

This clearly points out the criminalization that our communities, their Weichafe [Warriors] and all those who do not sell out face, those that are not satisfied with integrationist Settler projects since they want to reconstruct their own ancestry, cosmology, their own existence as a Nation separate from the circle of decadent consumer capital, which has caused so much harm in our beloved Wallmapu.

There has been total indifference of the right wing racist government of Sebastian Piñera, whom has unleashed a brutal repression against our Mapuche communities in resistance, through the works of his Minister Hinzpeter.

These cowardly fascistic pigs have a preference to attack children, women and elders in the communities as a way to create terror; anything to stop the struggle of our People for their liberation.

They tried to break the will of the young hunger strikers in arbitrary transfers, separation and isolation from loved ones and the brutal reprisal by the Police and the Chilean State on marches and communities in support of the hunger strike, as in the finest moments of the fascist dictatorship.

Today we are here, to denounce and state to Piñera’s government to stop the repression in Wallmapu. Despite all their police, their laws, their dirty intelligence and the folklore they wish to portray our People as, they will never be able to detain what is inevitable: to break our Mapuche Nation from the dirty capitalist claws that have depraved our lives. As Matias Catrileo would say, “We are a separate People, we are not Chilean;” the sacrifice that our Weichafe [Warriors] make today, will bear fruit in the not too distant future.

For the Reclamation, Reconstruction and Liberation of the Mapuche Nation!

Comunicado WCCC [Toronto]: A Parar La Represión en Wallmapu! ¡Libertad a Nuestros Presos Políticos Mapuche!

¡Libertad a Los Presos Políticos Mapuche!

Supreme Court Partially Annuls Conviction against Mapuche on Hunger Strike

Supreme Court Partially Annuls Conviction against Mapuche on Hunger Strike

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

The Chilean Supreme Court decided to annul part of the trial that in August convicted two Mapuche of the Mapuche community members that have been on hunger strike for 60 days in Angol Prison.

The President of the Criminal Court of the maximum tribunal of Chile, Milton Juica, explained that in the case of Daniel Levinao Montoya, the court unanimously ordered to annul the sentence of attempted murder against General Ivan Bezmalinovic, but confirms the conviction for illegal possession of a weapon.

In this way, a new trial will have to be carried out to determine the alleged responsibility for the charge of attempted murder against a police officer, just leaving him convicted of illegal arms possession.

Meanwhile, Paulino Levipan Coyan, will be able to leave prison immediately, located in the capital of Malleco province, since the Supreme Court reduced the sentence from 10 years to 3 years and 541 days, through consignment without the deprivation of freedom, in changing the charge from attempted homicide to assault on a police officer.

This triumph on the part of the Mapuche and their defense could influence the hunger strike that the two youth, together with two other inmates convicted of similar incidents in Angol Prison, an action that has been carried out for two months, maintaining a precarious state of health.

Today Wednesday, Chilean Justice will Confirm or Annul the Sentence against Mapuche Political Prisoners on Hunger Strike

Today Wednesday, Chilean Justice will Confirm or Annul the Sentence against Mapuche Political Prisoners on Hunger Strike

October 24th, 2012

Today marks the 60th day of the Mapuche Political Prisoner Hunger Strike and where judges of the Chilean Supreme Court will decide to confirm or annul the sentence against two of the youth currently on hunger strike.

While in Collipulli, the preparation of the Oral Hearings against Eric and Rodrigo Montoya will take place, the Chilean Supreme Court will release its verdict on the motion to annul the trial of Daniel Levinao and Paulino Levipan, sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted murder of a police officer.

On Tuesday night, Paulino and Eric had to be transferred once again to Angol Hospital where they suffered a worsening of their conditions, including vomiting, dizziness inside their cells, which has maintained their families and the Wente Winkul Mapu community in suspense.

There is a callout to join the Mapuche leaders and their families at the Supreme Court of Chile, today Wednesday at 12 noon, at Morande and Bandera Street in Santiago.

If the conviction is annulled, this means that the prisoners will have to face a new trial and judicial proceedings for the same incidents, having the prosecution reformulate its strategy. If the conviction is confirmed, a radicalization of the hunger strike is expected, as the prisoners themselves affirmed they “are willing to assume a dignified death.”

Several Arrested and Injured as Protest Continue for Mapuche Political Prisoners on Hunger Strike

Several Arrested and Injured as Protest Continue for Mapuche Political Prisoners on Hunger Strike

October 23rd, 2012

Two new demonstrated were carried out in Concepcion and Santiago, where the support for the Mapuche on hunger strike was portrayed despite the police repression that tried to have it silenced.

In Concepcion there were over 100 people that congregated at the main Court building, and were greeted aggressively by a group of Special Force Police Units, provoking confrontation with protestors.

However, people were not intimidated and continued marching through the pedestrian passages of the city, where they were insistently followed by police.

Nine people were arrested, among them members of the Support Network of Communities in Struggle, Mapuche youth centres, and high school youth. Some even bled from the police beatings, beings taken to the Lomas Verdes Police Division.

Meanwhile, in Santiago, dozens of people congregated in the main downtown artery, La Alameda, with banners and placards, as well as barricades installed to stop traffic and call attention to the 59 days that the four Mapuche Political Prisoners have carried out on Hunger Strike.

Wente Winkul Mapu Call to Mobilize for Mapuche Prisoners 2 Months into Hunger Strike

Wente Winkul Mapu Community Call to Mobilize for Mapuche Political Prisoners 2 Months into the Hunger Strike

October 23rd, 2012

The Mapuche Wente Winkul Mapu Community call out to communities, social organizations and all Peoples that are in solidarity with the Mapuche Political Prisoners, in Wallmapu, Chile or abroad to unite forces and MOBILIZE  everywhere in support of the Mapuche youth that are willing to give their lives for their freedom and their People.

Daniel Levinao, Rodrigo Montoya, Paulino Levipan and Eric Montoya are in a critical state of health; the latter two are currently being held in Angol hospital, after suffering dizziness, vomiting and migraines, conditions which worsen their hunger strike now on its 59th day – that is to say, two months without food.

The Wente Winkul Mapu Community of Lof Chekenco value the fact that the five Mapuche Political Prisoners were able to twist the arm of the Gendarmerie and have them be transferred at the latest on Thursday, however always on alert for the compliance to be fulfilled, since if not the prisoners will return to their dry hunger strike, which had them on the brink of death.

They also call out to be alert of the demands that were left on the sideline, as the dismissal of Prosecutor Luis Chamorro in Mapuche cases, and the end to the abuse suffered by those visiting the Peñi [Brothers] in prison.

That is why the Community and their Lonko [Chief] Daniel Melinao call to not weaken the pressure and continue to go out onto the streets to demonstrate in support of the youth that are practically giving their lives in order to achieve their freedom, without leaving behind the struggle of communities for the reclamation of Mapuche Territory.

“Marches in Santiago and Concepcion have been organized and it is necessary that all the people go out to protest once again to demonstrate that the prisoners are not alone,” stated Daniel Melinao, calling for manifestations programmed for today Tuesday. Moreover, he called out to people in other cities and other countries to organize any form of protest, since these are decisive days for the difficult situation of the youth in prison.

Mapuche Prisoners in Temuco suspend Dry Hunger Strike; Angol Prisoners Continue Hunger Strike

Mapuche Prisoners in Temuco suspend Dry Hunger Strike; Angol Prisoners Continue Hunger Strike

Oct 23rd, 2012

After Gendarmerie promised their prompt transfer from Temuco Prison to that of Angol, the 5 Mapuche Political Prisoners have decided to suspend their dry hunger strike.

It was the main demand made by Leonardo Quijon, Cristian Levinao, Guido Bahamondes, Fernando Millacheo and Luis Marileo in order to postpone their mobilization, where the National Gendarmerie Directive stubbornly agreed to their transfer so they may be close to their families, all of which reside in communities within the area of Ercilla.

The spokesperson of the Mapuche youth, Freddy Marileo, stated that if the agreement is not met by the prison institution by this Thursday, the 5 Mapuche Political Prisoners will re-initiate their dry hunger strike, which has meant a total loss of weight of approximately 10 kg on average, as well as the many physical consequences which are difficultly recovered.

Meanwhile, in Angol prison 4 Mapuche Political Prisoners continue their hunger strike now ion its 58th day. Two of which, Eric Montoya and Paulino Levipan, were transferred to the city hospital after a series of health complications.
